SEND Provision at Edgar Wood Academy - Ensuring Inclusion, Ambition, and Equity for All
The SENDCo at Edgar Wood Academy is Mr P Moreton who can be contacted at p.moreton@edgarwood.org and also Mrs E Kane who is our Assistant SENDCo and can be contacted at e.kane@edgarwood.org.
At Edgar Wood Academy, we are committed to providing an ambitious, inclusive, and supportive educational experience for all students, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Our SEND provision is rooted in the belief that every child has the right to access a high-quality, broad and balanced curriculum that enables them to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our curriculum is ambitious for all students, including those with SEND. It is carefully sequenced and knowledge-based, designed to build deep understanding and promote mastery of key concepts over time. Our inclusive approach ensures all students experience the richness of our curriculum, with adaptations made where necessary to enable meaningful access.
We follow a graduated response to SEND support, using the three-wave model to deliver provision at universal, targeted, and specialist levels:
Wave 1: Universal Provision
All students on the SEND register receive high-quality, inclusive classroom teaching through:
Quality First Teaching (QFT): Adaptive, responsive, and inclusive approaches within lessons. Pupil Passports: Clear strategies and key information shared with all staff to support personalised planning and classroom adjustments. Adaptive Teaching: Teachers plan responsively, using a range of strategies to ensure all learners can engage and succeed.
Wave 2: Targeted Interventions
Where further support is required, targeted interventions are implemented, based on the four broad areas of need:
• Communication and Interaction
• Cognition and Learning
• Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
• Sensory and/or Physical Needs
Interventions are evidence-based and aligned with individual learning needs. Interventions focus on progress in learning, emotional regulation, and curriculum access. They are tracked and reviewed regularly to measure impact and inform next steps.
Wave 3: Specialist Support
Some students may require more intensive support. Wave 3 provision includes:
External agency involvement to assess, advise and support implementation of specialised strategies.
Partnerships include:
• RANS (Rochdale Additional Needs Service)
• Speech and Language Therapy (SALT)
• Educational Psychology Services
This level of support ensures that all students with more complex or persistent needs receive coordinated, professional input tailored to their individual context.
Our Commitment
At Edgar Wood Academy, we uphold the principle that SEND is not a barrier to high achievement. We work collaboratively with families, external professionals, and our own skilled staff to ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential - academically, socially, and emotionally.
