Admissions & Applying

Thinking about applying to Edgar Wood Academy? Here are answers to the questions parents ask most often about the application process, oversubscription criteria and waiting lists.

For full details, see our Admissions page.

How do I apply for a place at Edgar Wood Academy?

Applications for Year 7 entry are made through Rochdale Borough Council, not directly to the school. You can apply online at rochdale.gov.uk. Edgar Wood Academy has an admission number of 180 places per year group.

What is the closing date to apply?

The closing date for Year 7 applications is 31 October, with national offer day on 2 March. Late applications may still be considered, so it's worth applying even if you've missed the deadline.

How are places allocated if the school is oversubscribed?

Priority is given first to looked-after children, then children with exceptional medical or social needs, then siblings of current students, children eligible for the service premium, children of staff recruited for a skill-shortage role, and finally by distance from the Academy, measured by shortest walking route.

Can I apply for a place outside my child's normal age group?

Yes. Parents/carers can request this as part of their application, explaining the reasons. The Trust considers each request individually, in the best interests of the child, taking into account the Headteacher's view and any supporting evidence provided.

What if my application is unsuccessful - can I appeal or join a waiting list?

Yes to both. A waiting list operates until 31 December and is reordered according to the oversubscription criteria whenever a child joins or leaves it. All applicants refused a place also have the right to appeal to an independent panel.

Can I apply for a place mid-way through the school year?

Yes. Edgar Wood Academy participates in Rochdale Council's in-year admissions scheme for Years 7–11. Applications are made via the Council, and if a year group is full, your child can be added to the waiting list with a right of appeal.
