Year 9 GCSE Options

Students’ experiences at Key Stage 3 (year 7, 8 & 9) at Edgar Wood Academy form a broad and balanced foundation across a full range of subjects, fully adhering to the National Curriculum.

In Key Stage 4 (year 10 & 11), in order to allow more time for subjects to be studied in-depth, an element of choice is introduced. This page contains details of courses available in Key Stage 4. It is designed to help students and parents understand the implications of option choices and to assist students, in particular, to make wise choices.

A number of subjects are compulsory in line with Government and Department for Education guidelines. In addition, we will mandate the studying of a Humanities subject (History or Geography). The rationale behind this is that research shows studying these subjects can support the development of literacy, that can in turn raise attainment across Key Stage 4.
