Transition
Transition September 2026
Welcome to the Edgar Wood Academy Family
At Edgar Wood Academy, we understand how important it is for children and their families to feel supported, reassured, and informed as they begin their journey into secondary school. Transition is far more than moving to a new building - it’s joining a new community, a new routine, and a new family. That’s why we work closely with the parents, carers, primary schools and the Rochdale Transition Group, made up of primary transition leads and SENDCos from across the borough, to ensure that everything is in place to welcome each child with care and confidence.
Mrs Gemma Carroll leads our transition programme, and our dedicated lead for year 6 to 7 transition and Mr Pete Moreton, works hand-in-hand with parents, carers, and primary schools and SENDCOs to ensure every student experiences a smooth and positive transition. By working closely with our SEND team and subject leaders, we shape a transition and induction programme that meets the needs of every child.
Our commitment is simple: we want every student who joins us to achieve, belong, and thrive.
- Achieve by maintaining strong academic progress and building on the foundations set in primary school.
- Belong by feeling part of a warm, welcoming school family where they are known, valued, and supported.
- Thrive by growing in confidence, settling in quickly, and accessing the right support at the right time.
We are delighted to welcome you and your child to Edgar Wood Academy - where every family is embraced, every student is supported, and every young person is encouraged to flourish.

Enrichment at Edgar Wood Academy

At Edgar Wood Academy, our enrichment and personal development programme is designed so that every student can belong, thrive and achieve through a wide range of opportunities:
- Belong – by taking part in clubs, sports, volunteering and leadership activities that help students feel connected, valued, and part of the school community.
- Thrive – by exploring new interests, developing skills and gaining experiences across the arts, music, sport, STEM, and beyond, helping them grow in confidence, character and ambition.
- Achieve – by challenging themselves through practical, creative and leadership opportunities that build resilience, teamwork, and real-world skills, preparing them for success both at school and beyond.
Our enrichment programme is carefully tracked, extensive, and thoughtfully tailored to reflect our school context and students’ aspirations. All students can participate fully, with adjustments and support made where needed to remove barriers and enable everyone to benefit.
Opportunities are available before school, at lunchtimes, after school, and sometimes as trips, providing flexibility for students to take part according to their interests and schedules.
Students can enjoy a broad selection of sports including football, rugby, netball, basketball, athletics and darts, supported by our fully equipped fitness suite. They can also work with external specialists such as boxing and skateboarding instructors, providing first-hand experience and insights from experts across different industries.
Our creative and academic clubs include chess, journalism, STEM, computer programming, music, samba, choir, drama, art, and cooking, giving students the chance to discover new talents and develop existing ones.
Volunteering and community-focused opportunities are an important part of enrichment, with activities including The Big Clean Up, Eco Group, Gardening, Duke of Edinburgh, and various charity initiatives, encouraging students to make a positive difference.
We also offer multiple leadership opportunities that all students are encouraged to access, including Junior Leadership Team, Anti-bullying Ambassadors, Hive (SEND) Ambassadors, Mental Health Activists, Behaviour Mentors, and in year 11, Head Boy and Head Girl. These roles help students take responsibility, develop confidence, and lead initiatives that benefit the whole Academy.
Through this rich and inclusive programme, every student at Edgar Wood Academy is supported to belong, thrive and achieve, making the most of their talents, interests, and potential.
Transition Summer Activities

- Designed around our core subjects—English, Mathematics, and Science—these tasks will support a smooth transition into year 7.
- They’ll give your child the chance to build confidence, strengthen key skills, and feel part of our learning community before the term begins.
- The activities are available through the links below, ready for your child to explore over the summer.
